Gardening tips for August

The vegetable garden comes into its own in August, with plenty of delicious home grown produce to harvest. Here are some tasks to keep you busy this month:

  1. Water sweetcorn plants regularly and feed with tomato foodto get the best cobs.
  2. Apply a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food once fruits start to form on peppers, cucumber and aubergine plants.
  3. Continue to feed tomato plantswith tomato food and remove lower leaves to help with air circulation and prevent disease. Pinch out the top of tomato plants to concentrate the growth into the fruit that has already formed. Aim to leave 5 or 6 trusses of fruit per plant.
  4. Cut back herbsto encourage a new flush of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the first frosts. Dry or freeze excess herbs to use in the kitchen later on.
  5. Thin parsley to help it establish a good root system before winter. Leave 25cm between each plant.
  6. Pinch out the growing tips of your aubergine plants once they have 5 or 6 fruits. Pick fruits while they’re young and shiny.

Spring-sown carrots and beetroot will be ready to harvest now although they can be left in the ground to keep growing.

  1. Continue to harvest second early potatoesnow — perfect for salads!
  2. Start harvesting your main crop of potatoesas the leaves yellow and die back. Store your potatoes in hessian sacks which exclude light but allow ventilation.
  3. Lift and dry onions, shallots and garliconce the foliage has flopped over and yellowed. Store them in onion bags to prevent mould developing.
  4. Harvest French and runner beans little and often to prevent them from setting seed.
  5. Keep harvesting courgettes before they become too big!
  6. Take cuttings of herbssuch as rosemary, sage or mint now to bulk up supplies. Put cuttings in moist, well-drained potting compost (one part grit to one part compost) and place in a cold frame. Established clumps of chives can be divided now.
  7. Keep an eye out for potato and tomato blight and remove and destroy any affected plants immediately to prevent its spread.
  8. Check for cabbage white butterfly eggs under brassica and leafy greenleaves and squash any that you find. Alternatively use nematodes to kill the caterpillars.
  9. Clear away any diseased and spent foliage around your veg plantsto discourage pests and diseases spreading

Date for your diary

The annual Rashina Vintage Day takes place on Sunday 6th September in Doon opposite the GAA grounds commencing at 12.00noon. See local posters for a list of events that will be held on the day.

Seven Rules of Life

  1. Let it Go – Never ruin a good day by thinking of a bad yesterday.

Ignore them – don’t listen to other people. Live a life that’s empowering to you.

  1. Give it time – time heals everything.
  2. Don’t compare – The only person you should try to beat is the person you were yesterday.
  3. Stay calm – it’s ok not to have everything figured out. Know that in time you’ll get there.
  4. It’s on You – only you are in charge of your happiness.
  5. Smile – life is short. Enjoy it while you have it.

Ballinahown & District News 30 May 2026

Calls for traffic calming scheme for Ballinahown village

Westmeath County Council is to compile a report on the award-winning village of Ballinahown later this year to determine its suitability for the introduction of a traffic calming scheme. The issue of a safety scheme for the village, which is located on the Westmeath border with Offaly, was raised earlier this year at a meeting of Athlone Moate Municipal District by local Fine Gael Cllr, John Dolan. He tabled a question to the meeting seeking an update on what progress, if any, had been made on a safety scheme “to ensure speed reduction” in the village, and a timeline for any works being done.

The written response from the council executive said there is ongoing engagement between the transportation department and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) with a view to prioritising traffic calming measures in towns and villages “located on the national road network” across county Westmeath. Certain criteria must be met in order to be considered for prioritisation, among them being collision history, accident frequency and severity, among others. The response said it is intended to commence a “feasibility and options report” for Ballinahown village later this year in order to see if it meets the required criteria. The response from the council also referenced the introduction of traffic calming measures in 2024 on the local road passing the school in Ballinahown, and said these measures had “significantly improved” the school environment and the northern approach to the village.

Gardening in January

Things to Consider

Remember that this is a time when many tree & shrubs are hibernating so it is the perfect time to up-root and reposition or prune back. Don’t forget that the weather can have a be influence on things this time of year and so be aware of harsh frosts and avoid planting, moving and pruning in these conditions. January can be the coldest month of the year. Lawns can find themselves under some stress this time of year so avoid excessive walking on them, especially if the ground is wet

Things to Do

The Fruit & Veg Garden

Continue to sow Garlic bulbs outdoors. Keep your spring crops covered using a garden cloche or frost fleece. If you haven’t done already; you can prepare your soil for the coming season. Turn soil adding well rotted farm yard manure. Start forcing rhubarb. Pruning of fruit trees can be done. Planting of bare root fruit bushes & trees.

In the Greenhouse

Open greenhouse door on sunny days to ventilate. By the end of the month you can begin sowing seeds indoors in your greenhouse such as Aubergines, Cauliflower, Green Beans. Loose Head Lettuce

Plant Care

Lift & divide herbaceous perennials. Pruning of trees & roses can be done. Transplanting of small & medium sized plants can be done

Lawn Care

Clear any remaining fallen leaves & dispose to your compost heap (Old foliage can harbour disease). If the ground is not frozen or overly wet you can give your lawn a light cut – just to neaten it up.

In the Garden, Beds & Borders

Mid Winter is a good time to look over your beds & rethink planting schemes. For example; where to plant some evergreen or screening plants. If you haven’t done so already you should mulch up around the base of tender shrubs. Mulch provides insulation, moisture retention & weed control. Winter months are a perfect time to do any planting. You can plant all potted or containerised plants. Bare season is in full swing & if you act fast you can still buy your pick of the bunch

General Maintenance

Continue to feed your birds. High energy feeds such as suet balls, fat balls or peanuts will help provide the essential nutrients in their time of greatest need.

Turn your compost bin once over the year & winter is a good time to do so.

Remembering those who are no longer with us.

While Christmas and New Year can be a joyous occasion it can also be a lonely time for people and families who have lost loved ones during the year. Please remember to call into those who have suffered a bereavement or just make a telephone call to let them know you are thinking of them. It will only take a minute and can mean so much.
