Community Chicken Coop

Our Community chicken coop is a sustainable initiative that significantly reduces food waste by providing a use for food scraps that might otherwise end up in landfills. Chickens consume a variety of kitchen scraps, transforming them into valuable resources like eggs and manure, which can be used as fertilizer.
We provide brown bins to the householder that lists what food scraps and peelings suitable for our chickens. Each chicken has their own name and personality!

Kelly one of the village residents is running the programme as she has lots of experience raising her own chickens – this has been a huge help in getting the project underway.
Householders who participate in the scheme are provided with fresh eggs.
Any eggs left over – with some Organic veg – in the community poly tunnel are available for sale- outside our Community Space – Fasach.

Here’s how community chicken coops help reduce food waste:

* Food Scrap Recycling:
Chickens can consume some vegetable food scraps, including vegetable peels, fruit. This reduces the amount of food waste going to landfills.
* Turning Waste into Resources:
Chicken manure is a valuable organic fertilizer, and eggs are a source of fresh, healthy food.
* Educational and Community Benefits:
Community chicken coops can educate householders and school children about sustainable practices and foster a sense of community. This is part of our Climate action awareness programme that we are running in our village.
* Reduced Carbon Footprint:
By using food scraps, chickens reduce the need for commercial feed production, which can have a smaller carbon footprint than shipping, refrigerating, and transporting food.
* Waste Reduction:
Chickens can biorecycle a significant amount of food waste, contributing to overall waste reduction efforts. For example, six chickens can potentially eat over 270 kg of food waste in a year if fed a diet of only fruits and vegetables.
